Laws of life, state of death

Skulls sit still on a desk, surrounded by dried flowers and a couple objects.

One of my first watercolor pencil pieces, done on a 9" by 12". Some ink and metallic leafing was used, as this
piece was mainly experimental. I wanted to see what I could do with the mediums given and a limited palette, and I have to say
I quite enjoyed both the process, and the result! There's nothing too meaningful behind this one, it was just fun to do. In retrospect, as a viewer, however, it suggests that through the morbidity of death's influence, we are humbled in life when we see it gone in other things. In dried flowers, their color remains, but they no longer grow. In animals, there is only bone, and at best partially preserved. This balance makes way for new life, and the words, sacrifices, actions, and understandings of those who'd lived before guide them into a brighter future.
